Why did some European nations that were being liberated from Nazi control at the end of World War 2 wind up with democratic and free societies while others wound up under communist control

Answer: As far as I know with what happened in the Vietnam and korean wars it depends on who controlled the country at the time of its liberation. its like if the USA was in control Vs the USSR of a certain country. If the USA is in control, then it ends up free and democratic after the USA leaves, while a country like the USSR would leave it communist.
