The goal of sustainable agriculture is to meet society's current food and textile needs without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their needs. As noted in the graph, the face of agriculture in the U.S. has changed dramatically since the 1950s
due to new technologies, mechanization, increased chemical use, and government policies that favored maximizing agricultural
production. These changes allow fewer farmers with reduced labor demands to produce the majority of the food and fiber in the U.S.
Yet the term sustainable agriculture is misleading. Explain why.
