Imagine you are teaching at a school that serves students from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The students tend to congregate in groups along ethnic lines, to the point that they are quite exclusive, and hostilities are building up between ethnic groups. Describe three strategies you and your fellow teachers might use to foster positive interaction and friendships across the groups. Describe each strategy in a separate paragraph, and be specific about what you might do.

Organize in class assignments and seating that will allow the students to interact. This way the students work on a common goal and they both have the same interest at heart.
Hold cultural events where the students show case their culture, food, language and spiritual beliefs with each other. Here the students will be in the position that they are open to share and they will also be open to learn. They will find that many assumptions are based on the fact that they are not fully informed. These exercises give the children something to look forward to and create a sense of pride and enlightenment.
Create a safe space for student to discuss issues that are on the news or happening in the school or classroom to let the students state clearly how they feel about certain things happening around them. What their fears are and how it affects them developing relationships with their classmates could be on the forefront of many of the discussions.
