During colonial times, European people and their descendants controlled most of the money and power in the region. Nowadays, this ethnic group continues to hold most of the influence and wealth of these nations. The trend is even more significant in countries with a large indigenous population, such as Ecuador and Peru, as indigenous people have very little access to opportunities for advancement.
