For contact forces to act two objects need to be touching each other in order for the force to be exerted. This force is the result of the electromagnetic repulsion between the electrons of the two objects. Field forces are not required to touch as an object placed in a the field produced by an object will have a force exerted on it. Generally the force exerted decreases with distance from the source.
