The lens used is a concave lens. Concave lens is a diverging lens

Here object is kept anywhere on the principal axis - between Infinity and Optical center (O)

First, we draw a ray parallel to principal axis.

So, it appears to pass through focus after reflection.

Another ray is drawn which pass through optical center.

So, the ray will go through without any deviation.

Where both reflected rays meet, an image is formed. The image is formed between F1 and the optical center.

The characteristics of the image are:

  1. Image is behind the mirror - Real Image.
  2. Image is Erect.
  3. Image is smaller than the object (diminished)

In the diagram, the shape of the lens is concave and the image is virtual.

What is a lens?

A lens can be defined as a transparent optical instrument that is designed to refract rays of light, so as to produce a real image.

The types of lens

Basically, there are two (2) main types of lens and these includes;

  • Convex (converging) lens
  • Concave (diverging) lens

A concave lens is also referred to as a diverging lens and it can be defined as a type of lens that is designed to diverge rays of light from the source, in order to form a diminished, upright, virtual image.

This ultimately implies that, a concave lens is capable of forming both real and virtual images.

In conclusion, the shape of the lens in the diagram is concave and the image is virtual.
