Answer:
In C3 photosynthesis, the reactions that require ATP take place in
B) the Calvin cycle alone.
Explanation:
In C3 PLANTS PHOTOSYNTHESIS OCCUR IN TWO STEPS-
1. LIGHT stage , WHICH TAKES PLACE IN LIGHT. In this stage water is split and ATP is released.
2. DARK stage, which takes place in dark. This the stage where calvin cycle takes place which require ATP, i.e energy. In this process sugar is produced with help of carbon dioxide. In this carbon dioxide is accepted by 5- carbon molecule ribulose-1, 5-biphosphate, which result into two molecules of 3- phosphoglycerate. this three carbon compound. hence is called as C3 pathway. hence C3 plants.
In C3 photosynthesis, the reactions that require ATP take place in the Calvin cycle alone.
The C3 metabolic pathway is found in photosynthetic organisms such as cyanobacteria, green algae, and in most vascular plants.
C3 plants use only the Calvin cycle to obtain their first stable product of CO2 fixation: phosphoglycerate (PGA) and phosphoglycollate, three-carbon (C3).
The C3 cycle is an autocatalytic process that involves 13 stages, which take place in the stroma of the chloroplasts of photosynthetic cells, and which can be grouped into three phases: carboxylation, reduction and regeneration.
- The carboxylation reaction is catalyzed by the enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase (RuBisCO) that combines the acceptor molecule ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) with CO2.
- In the reductive phase, this compound is phosphorylated and reduced to form glyceraldehyde-1,3-bisphosphate (3-PGAL) using ATP and NADPH produced in the light phase of photosynthesis.
- The regeneration of RuBP is the final phase of the cycle, and requires ATP and ten of the thirteen enzymes involved in this pathway. Most of the 3-PGAL produced is used to regenerate the initial RuBP acceptor.
Therefore, we can conclude that in C3 photosynthesis, the reactions that require ATP take place in the Calvin cycle alone.
