Figurative languages helps in building a better comparison, analysis and a relation in the literary texts.
In the below stated line from Momaday's "The Way to Rainy Mountain", the figurative language, personification has been used:
"And the uppermost branches of the tree seemed very slowly to ride across the blue sky"
Personification is the figure of speech in which the characteristics of the humans are attributed in the non-human things. This helps in creating an altogether different effect in the literary texts. In the above mentioned line, the human characteristic of riding has been personified with the movement of the branches of the trees. Since, the trees are living beings but they do not posses the feature of moving or riding in the way the humans are capable of Therefore, the characteristic of riding has been personified here.
