The Americans controlled south of the line - the Russians installed a communist regime in the north, later ceding influence to China.

Well, Korea was divided into two parts North Korea and South Korea. This happened after the Korean War, or the Forgotten War, which was happening while WW2 was happening. This war began in June 25 1950 and ended in July 27 1953. Why this happened is because 75,000 soldiers of the North Korea army invaded South Korea.
