They type of figurative language that is used in this passage is allusion. To start off, allusion is defined as “Any reference to something historical or popular, including texts, speeches, historical events or people, pieces of art, or myths.” In the first sentence of the text, it states, “I’m hoping the budding Michelangelo in my drawing class goes after that scholarship.” Here, the narrator refers to their classmate as “Michelangelo”, who is very famous for being a sculptor, painter, architect, and poet. Since we know that the narrator is in a drawing class with this person they’re describing, we also know that the classmate is an artist. By referring to Michelangelo, the narrator is saying that this person has a lot of talent, and could become quite famous some day. Furthermore, this allusion adds on to the story’s tone and expressed perspective of the classmate, seeing as the narrator seems to have nothing but praise for this person. For instance, when they convey, “I know in my gut that he will succeed, and the world needs more artists like him”. By using this type of figurative language, it clarifies my understanding of how the narrator views their classmate.
