2. Oscar Romero speaks out against the human rights violations of the government.
Oscar Romero was the archbishop of San Salvador and spoke out against the excesses of the military government much to their chagrin because the Catholic church was hugely influential.
3. Oscar Romero is assassinated.
Oscar Romero was then assassinated in 1980 during mass and this led to a public outcry and hatred for the military government which tried to deny a role in the killing.
4. A civil war begins.
War completely broke out in 1980 and lasted till 1992 with the U.S. responsible for providing aid and training to the death squads that killed untold thousands.
