First, we connect two wires each in one of the terminals of the battery. One of the wires is connected to the string of lights, the other extreme of the string of lights is connected to another wire, this wire is connected to one of the switch terminals and the other terminal is connected to the other terminal of the battery.

This can be seen in the attached image. When we operate the switch we can turn on and off the lights.
