The Sibley Commission was formed following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Sibley Commission was created to study the issue of desegregation.
The Sibley Commission was formed for avoiding conflict with the federal government, the federal government directed the Georgia General Assembly to start the General Assembly Committee on schools. This committee, however, was charged with quantifying public sentiment to school desegregation and reporting that news to the governor. The whole Sibley Commission allowed the public to state their thoughts about this desegregation ongoing in public schools.
