Despite losing slave labor in the South, Southern plantations continued to focus on cash crops. To compensate for the loss of slaves, Southerns began a sharecropping system which kept blacks as their labor source.

The federal government passed many laws and two amendments providing citizenship rights to former slaves. However, local and state laws were being enforced over the federal laws. These laws were referred to as Jim Crow laws and they kept blacks in a lower position in society and made it difficult for blacks to acquire their citizenship.

The Civil War required a vast amount of money and Southern banks were struggling at the end of the war. Without investment money, plantations went bankrupt. There was also little money to be used to invest in industrial businesses.

The boll weevil is a beetle that feeds on cotton crops. The Southern crop was hit hard with a boll weevil invasion causing massive crop failure and loss of money in the South.
