Austria-Hungary seized the country of Serbia in 1908 setting off tensions in Europe. This set off massive tension as the USSR felt compelled to defend what it saw as it's Slavic "cousins" and there was already ethnic tension in the Balkans, which the Austrians were not helping to dissolve. This was one of the leading factors for World War I
