How did the end of communism lead  to higher unemployment?

In course of the end of the Cold War and that of Germany reunification, there was said to be a movement  from communist to capitalist economies.

Due to this movement, a lot of poorly developed industries that were found  in the east were said to be unable to compete or stand against a lot of other advanced industries in the west and as such, it lead to a much more higher rate of unemployment.
