What is an historical idea or event that supports Douglas' point of view on slavery?

(Doughlas' point of view was that it can remain as 2 sides. However, I need a Historical idea or even that supports that)

Basically what supports Douglas point of view on slavery was that he really thought that it was wrong and he tried his best even though he was the only black on Mail on that team that he was playing on it doesn’t matter he had his faith in God and it says it in the text that he was a very honest and strong guy
