When this is said by his mother it shows the effect that oppression of the darker-skinned persons has had on others so much to where a mother is criticizing her own child. This is only because she seeks validation from the los gringos(aka white people). This speaks to me because as an African-American, I too have faced racism, oppression, discrimination, and criticism because of my brown skin or in other words my ✨complexion✨.
