Answer:
There were three main characters in this story.
Della Dillingham Young (dynamic)
James Dillingham Young (dynamic/ static)
Madame Sofronie (flat)
Explanation:
Della was a dynamic character throughout the story because she was always up for the help, support, care and sacrifice. She can handle and change according to the situation. She sold her hairs to buy gift to her husband.
James was a static character in start because change was not his thing but when he had no money for gift, he decided to sell his precious thing just make his wife happy by giving her gift so it was also his dynamic side. So, James was both dynamic and static.
Madame Sofronie was a flat business woman who had no concern what Della is going through or what hairs meant to her. She didn't even look properly and told Della the price. So, madame Sofronie was a flat, emotionless, harsh business woman.
The two major characters are Della and Jim. There is one minor character, which is Mrs. Sofronie. Let's analyze them:
1. Della is a dynamic character because she experiences change and growth throughout the story. She sacrifices what she loves the most about herself - her hair - to buy a Christmas gift for her beloved husband (external conflict). She suffers to make such a decision (internal conflict), but goes through with it.
On the other hand, she is also a flat character when it comes to her personality. All we know about her is that she loves Jim dearly. Nothing else is developed, we do not see any other sides or facets of her personality.
2. Jim is a bit more complicated and open to interpretation because he only appears at the end of the story. However, we can tell that, just like his wife, he probably went through the same struggle. He too sacrificed his valuable watch to buy her a gift. We can assume that he, too, is a dynamic character.
Again, just like Della, we can say Jim is a flat character. His personality is not developed, especially because he barely appears in the story.
3. Mrs. Sofronie is a flat and static stock character. That means she is not developed at all. She only appears to help the plot move forward by buying Della's hair.
