these patterns are similar because in both the number of dots are increasing. they are different because the pattern in the first one is adding 2 each step, while in the second one you are taking the starting amount, multiplying it by 2 then adding 1. to find the number of dots for step 5 you would add 2 in the first pattern, in the second pattern multiply by 2 add 1.
