Conservative boundaries (plates moving alongside each other) most often create earthquakes, because the motion of the two plates moving in different directions results in the two getting stuck, and the build up of pressure is released in seismic waves when they start to move again. Earthquakes can also occur at destructive plate margins due to the opposite direction of movement of the oceanic plate to the continental plate as it subducts underneath the larger plate.
