Well do this step by step. 

3x - 6 < 12 

First step: add 6 to both sides so it cancels out the 6 on the left side. 

3x - 6 <12 
     +6 < +6 

step two: Now solve 12 + 6 = 18

Set up your equation again. 

3x < 18 

Step three: Now divide both sides by 3 to isolate the variable by it's self. 

3x < 18 
÷3 < ÷3

Step four: now the 3 on the left side disappears and we solve the right side.

x < 6 

So your answer issssssss

x < 6 !!!

Good Luck! 
x could be 3 for example. Cause 3(3)= 9 and 9-6=3 which is still less than 12. But there's other ways of doing this and other answers to what x could be.
