Internal storytelling is also known as a framed narrative, which can
further be thought of as a story within a story. Internal storytelling
can provide context for the main story and provide some important
background information that communicates rationale for certain things
within a main story. Internal storytelling, additionally, can provide
different points of view by having the internal story told from the
perspective of another character, and one thing this does is grant the
reader insights into cognitive workings of multiple characters that may
have otherwise gone unknown, especially if the narrator is limited (as
opposed to omniscient).
