7x + 3y = -1
x + y = -3.....x = -3 - y

7(-3-y) + 3y = -1
-21 + -7y + 3y = -1
-4y = -1 + 21
-4y = 20
y = 20/-4
y = -5

x + y = -3
x - 5 = -3
x = -3 + 5
x = 2

Since,seven times the first number plus three times second number equals negative one.so,

Again, the sum of both the number is negative three.so,

Multiplying equation (2) by 7, we get

[tex]7x+7y=-21[/tex]

Now subtracting equation (1) from the above equation, we get

[tex]4y=-20[/tex]

[tex]y=-5[/tex].

Putting the value of y in equation (2) we get

[tex]x-5=-3\\[/tex]

[tex]x=2[/tex]

Thus the first number be 2 and the other number is -5.
