The single most significant characteristic of Greece is the uneven terrain and how mountaineous it is. Because the landscape of Greece if full of mountains, this led to the development of smaller city states, where the different cities never had much contact in the sense of forming a greater Greek nation. They did trade and waged war, but not much more.
