The map shown here is the Mercator Projection. This is the map most commonly used in the world today. It helps diagram many land areas and features, but it distorts some parts of the world close to the poles such as Greenland and Antarctica. Due to Earth's spherical nature these to not translate well to a flat map, so they appear much bigger than they actually are.

The map above uses the Mercator projection. This projection is useful for navigation because its lines of latitude and longitude are not curved. However, it has many problems. The biggest issue with the Mercator projection is distortion. It does not properly show the shapes or areas of the world’s continents.
