Lew Wallace offered amnesty to Billy the Kid and when Wallace was not true to his word, Billy the Kid threatened to “ride into the plaza…put a bullet through Lew Wallace." Eventually Billy the Kid was killed, but Lew Wallace was discouraged with New Mexico's lawlessness. After 3 years he resigned. His wife quoted as saying “General Sherman was right. We should have another war with Old Mexico to make her take back New Mexico.”
