Booker Washington as encouraging Black people to stop migrating out of the South and instead stay and make something of themselves.
Booker T. Washington was a black leader in the late 1800s and early 1900s who:
- encouraged Southern Blacks to stay in the South because they knew the area and could prosper if they adequately applied themselves
- encouraged Southern Whites to hire Southern Blacks
- encouraged Black people not to ask for some rights like the right to vote to avoid antagonizing the Southern Whites
In telling Southern Blacks to cast down their bucket, Washington was saying that they should not move but instead use the skills in them (in their bucket) for the good of the South.
We can conclude that Booker Washington believed that Black people could make a living for themselves in the South even though there was a lot of racism because he believed that hard work could conquer anything.
