The riverbank of the St. Charles River was divided by a road.

Explanation

The riverbank of the St. Charles River was divided by a road 12 miles in lenght. The first 2 miles of the road was gravelled whilst the remaining 10 was paved. According to Lines 15 and 16, each side of the divide consisted of houses and big live oak and  pecan trees.
