Critical Thinking Exercise.

You conduct an experiment where you take a sample of high school students and randomly divide them into two groups. Both groups view the same videotaped lecture. For the experimental group, a cell phone goes off at random intervals during the lecture. For the control group, there are no such distractions. After the video, both groups are given the same test of the material.

1. Formulate 1 hypothesis for this study.

2. Name the independent and dependent variables.

3. Name two factors that were controlled in this study.

4. What kinds of descriptive statistics would you compute once you have the collected the data?

5. Name your sample and your population in this study.

The hypothesis, independent variable, dependent variable, controlled factors, descriptive statistics, sample and population of the study are :

Hypothesis : Study disruption do have a negative effect on student's performance.

Independent variable : These are the cellphones(stable and unstable) used in the study.

Dependent variable : This is the performance rating or test score of the student.

Contolled factors : Video lecture and test Given

Descriptive statistics calculated : The mean score of the experimental group and the control group will allow us compare each singular value.

Sample : Portion of high school students who partook in the study.

Population : All high school students.

  • Hypothesis : This is the presumption which we intend to test in our study.
  • Independent variable : These are the variables which causes a change in the dependent or measured variable.
  • Dependent variable : This is the variable we intend to measure, this is the test score.
  • Controlled factors: Variables which aren't altered in our experiment. There aren't changed. They are the videotaped lecture and the test given. They are the same for all subjects.
  • Descriptive statistics : A statistical quantity used to evaluate our result.
  • Population : These are all the set of subjects which fit into a particular study as they share the similar characteristics.
  • Sample : These are subset of the population chosen randomly to represent the population.
