It contributes significantly to the horror of the story. It’s cold, damp, and dark in the catacombs. Since the catacombs are burial vaults, Montresor and Fortunato pass by piles of bones/remains of dead bodies. Thus meaning it’s creates a great environment for Montresor to wall up his enemy.
