Society and culture flourished under the peace of the Tokugawa. The merchants became more important in society as cities and trade developed, although the common farmers generally suffered from increased taxes and costs. Furthermore, society became more and more stratified under Confucian beliefs.
As for culture, new urban literature aimed at the masses developed as poetry and crafts continued to advance.
