I am offering this poem
1) I am offering this poem to you,
since I have nothing else to give.
Keep it like a warm coat
when winter comes to cover you,
or like a pair of thick socks
the cold cannot bite through,

8) I have nothing else to give you,
9) so it is a pot full of yellow corn
10) to warm your belly in winter,
11) it is a scarf for your head, to wear
12) over your hair, to tie up around your face,

13) I love you,



14) Keep it, treasure this as you would
15) if you were lost, needing direction,
16) in the wilderness life becomes when mature;
17) and in the corner of your drawer,
18) tucked away like a cabin or hogan
19) in dense trees, come knocking,
20) and I will answer, give you directions,
21) and let you warm yourself by this fire,
22) rest by this fire, and make you feel safe

23) I love you,

24) It’s all I have to give,
25) and all anyone needs to live,
26) and to go on living inside,
27) when the world outside
28) no longer cares if you live or die;
29) remember,
