An echo is formed as a result of reflection of the original sound which returns to the listener. You might have experienced Echo in an EMPTY ROOM but no echo is produced after the room is occupied. To avoid echo from being  produced the echo has to be absorbed. Echo in a cinema theatre is absorbed by the WALLS of the theatre.

They are not plain. The walls are corrugated or shaped to form tiny holes or empty spaces to ABSORB the ECHO. Modern Theatre's have ABSORBENT materials sticked to the walls of the theatre.

  • absorption of sound waves by the body and cloths of viewers

Echo is a sound produced due to the reflection of a produced sound by a plain surface. Its continuous occurrence leads to reverberation. It causes distortion of produced sound which makes it unpleasant to hearing. Thus the need for a mechanism which would reduce it to a bearable level.

To reduce or eliminate echo, the walls of the cinema theater had been constructed with sound absorbing materials which may include special pads. These would have been incorporated into the walls, and would absorb most unwanted sounds produced in the theater.

Also the cloths worn by viewers absorbs some of the unwanted sound, thus assisting to indirectly reduce echo.
