Europa's surface is made of water ice and so it reflects 5.5 times the sunlight than our Moon does. Europa orbits Jupiter at about 417,000 miles (671,000 kilometers) from the planet, which itself orbits the Sun at a distance of roughly 500 million miles (780 million kilometers), or 5.2 astronomical units (AU).

Jupiter is the largest (most massive) planet in the solar system and the fifth (5th) in line from the Sun. Also, Jupiter comprises four (4) massive moons, which were discovered over four hundred (400) years ago by the Italian astronomer named Galileo Galilei and are usually referred to as the Galilean Moons, these include:

  • Lo.
  • Callisto.
  • Ganymede.
  • Europa.

Europa is the sixth (6) closest moon to Jupiter and most fascinating of the Galilean Moons.

Basically, Europa has a warm-water interior, an icy surface and a massive ocean of salty water beneath its thick ice shell. Thus, it's considered to be one of the celestial bodies that possesses life (alien creatures) outside of planet Earth.

Some of the areas in which Europa surpasses planet Earth include the following:

  • Europa is the smoothest celestial body found in the Solar System because it has minimal large-scale features such as mountains.
  • Europa has a mass of [tex]4.7998[/tex] × [tex]10^{22}[/tex] kilograms, mean density of 3.013 [tex]g/cm^3[/tex] and mean radius of about 1560 kilometers; thus, it is 24.5% the size of planet Earth and 0.008 times as massive.
  • A single orbit around Jupiter by Europa takes 3.55 Earth days to complete unlike planet Earth that has an orbit period of 365 Earth days (one year).
  • Europa’s atmosphere has a surface pressure [tex]10^{-12}[/tex] times that of planet Earth i.e 0.1 micro Pascals.
