But in other ways, the Europeans assimilated older patterns, as in the Indian Ocean, where they sought to dominate previously established trade routes, and they continued to trade many of the same products.

The Europeans took charge of the trade networks in the Eastern hemisphere as they used their superior equipment to chart a new trade route which enabled them to have an advantage over others.

However, they did not totally neglect the older trading routes as they also tried to dominate them with their goods and also because of their purchasing power.
