The Indian Territory was large during the time of war with its territories possessing huge amounts of natural resources that were valuable to conquer. Geographically, the majority of the Civil War happened in the southern and border states. A pressure developed on choosing between the union and the confederacy caused a faction to emerge in the tribes which in the long run saw large majority of the 5 tribes siding with the south. The Chickasaw nation declared its independence to join the confederate state.
