The small 2 is called an exponent.
56 x [tex] 10^{2} [/tex]
When exponents are used, they mean multiply that number that many times the exponent says. So right now it says [tex] 10^{2} [/tex] which means 10 x 10 = 100
-Another Example: [tex] 3^{3} [/tex] = 3 x 3 x 3 = 27
So now it's 56 x 100 = 5600
