The War of 1812 began due to violations to American shipping during conflict between the British and the French. There were also concerns over Native American attacks on Americans at the urging of the British on the Canadian border.

The War of 1812 lasted three years and when the two countries sat for peace negotiation many of the initially concerns had already ended. The Treaty of Ghent basically called a truce to the fighting and maintained all borders as they were before the war. Neither side gained any advantage from fighting the war and the two countries began a trade relationship following the war.
