Another thing is that he wants her to be safe. He told her about things that could happen on the ship she was sailing. He even went out of his way to give Charlotte a knife for her protection, which means he is kind enough to care about her safety. Readers can tell that Zacharia is so far a friendly character and can infer that he is not a bad person.
