In order to test Macduff's loyalty, Malcom pretends to be a bad person that is worse then Macbeth. He acts uninterested in saving or helping Scotland, and interesting in stopping Macbeth. He was suspicious of Macbeth because he is actually plotting against Macbeth, and he does not want Macduff to be a spy for Macbeth. Macduff says, "I am not treacherous" and Malcolm reveals his plan by saying, "But  Macbeth is...". This is when they end up transpiring to work together against Macbeth.
