The Aztecs thought that Cortés and his men were Quetzalcoatl and other of the Aztec gods returning to live among them. Cortés and his men were aided by a female captive from an earlier raid that Cortés used as his wife.
In short he thought less of them considering people thought of him to be a god of a sort himself.
