The way by which the Roman Empire fell or declined is still debated by scholars today. A theory was introduced by Edward Gibbon that stated that instead of Rome falling, it declined. In the fifth century Rome became too big for its own good. Other barbarians and powers began to seize control over roman territory. There were also great power struggles in deciding which city should have more power. These quarrels left them blind to things threatening their society bot physically and socially. Their military became more barbaric, less uniform and efficient. The Romans also began to separate from others by language and beliefs. Thus, the Romans collapsed in on themselves.
