Cladistics refines classic taxonomy by linking organisms, based on the presence or absence of unique characteristics, into “grades.” For example, if three species share a suite of characteristics but only two of them have a particular trait that is not present in more distantly related species, those two are more closely related and would be depicted as a separate grade.
