The Maya and the Aztec were major civilizations in Central America up until they were conquered by the Spanish. These two civilizations had to adapt to their environment to survive and one way they did so was by building their cities on swamps.

The swamps provided excellent defence against enemies when they were attacked because it provided a natural defence that would first have to be breached to get to the city.
