Plz explain this quote from e letter by Thomas Jefferson to John Adams.
"Never was a finer canvas presented to work on than our countrymen. All of them engaged in agriculture, or in the pursuits of honest industry, independent in their circumstances, enlightened as to their rights, and firm in their habits of order and obedience to the laws. this i hope will be the age of experiments in government, and that their basis will be founded on principles of honesty, not mere force."

Jefferson's supporters accused Adams of having a “hideous hermaphroditical character,” while Adams' camp called Jefferson “a mean-spirited, low-lived fellow.” Jefferson hired a sleazy journalist, James Callendar, to smear Adams in the press, including the (false) story that he wanted to start a war with France.
