The Indian Removal Act relocated the Native Americans toward the west such as in Oklahoma which freed up the land for the whites to continue to grow their "cotton empire". The government used the act as an excuse saying that "it would allow the Native Americans to live in peace and govern themselves in peace". This is where the trail of tears came in.  The effects were they lost their land, plus many of them died while on the journey westward.
