Religion has historically influenced Indian society on a political, cultural and economic level. There is a sense of pride associated with the country's rich religious history as the traditions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism all emerged out of India.

For many people that is theistic belief. So religion is necessary. In that India is a special case, for us, our beliefs are intertwined with our way of life - our culture, clothing, celebrations/festivals, food, history, morals and more. Thus in India, you don't mess with religion.
