For example the element chlorine contains 17 protons, therefore, it's atomic number is 17. This number doesn't change.

Atomic mass number is the total number of protons plus the number of neutrons.

The number of neutrons in the atoms of the same element may differ.

This is why only atomic number can be used in arranging elements in the periodic table. Difference in number of neutrons will give rise to difference in mass number.
