American imperialism is the economic, military and cultural influence of theUnited States on other countries. Such influence is often closely associated with expansion into foreign territories. The concept of an American Empire was first popularized during the presidency of James K. Polk who led the United States into the Mexican–American Warof 1846, and the eventual annexation of California and other western territories via the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the Gadsden purchase.

European imperialism affected the US foreign policy as it made US to stay from the European affairs. US started to have only commercial relations with other nations. The Americans considered that due to their remoteness from Europe they had no interest in what ever was happening in Europe. It remained politically isolated throughout 19th and 20th century. The prime factor for isolationism was the fear of Americans that their involvement in European affairs could jeopardize their freedom. This policy came to and end in early decades of 20th century.
